How to clean scanned drawings for metal fabrication hobbyists

Clean up scanned metal fabrication drawings step by step, with the tools to prepare, trace and export them, and mistakes to avoid.

Cleaning a scanned drawing means straightening and cropping the scan, removing background marks, making the lines solid black, and then tracing those lines into vector shapes that you can check against real dimensions. VectorMagik is one tool that handles the tracing step. [1]

What you need before you start

Before you clean a scan, have the paper drawing or the file it came from close at hand, so you can check the traced result against the original. Have a flatbed scanner, or a phone on a steady stand, and a plain surface behind the sheet so the edges show clearly. Know which dimensions matter most for the part, such as hole spacing, bend lines and overall length, and measure them on the paper with a steel rule or calipers first. Write down the material and its thickness, because a cut or a bend depends on those numbers and not on the picture. Keep a separate folder for each version of the drawing, so an edited copy never replaces the original scan. Finally, know which file format your cutting or bending machine accepts and settle that before you start, because it decides how you save the finished drawing.

Step by step

  1. Scan the drawing flat. Lay the sheet flat, close the lid, and scan in colour or greyscale so faint lines are not lost. A flat scan keeps lines straight and dimensions true.
  1. Straighten and crop. Rotate the scan until horizontal lines sit level, then crop away the paper edge, the table and any shadow.
  1. Check the scale. Measure one known dimension on the scan and compare it with the same dimension on the paper. If they differ, rescan the drawing rather than resizing it by eye.
  1. Remove the background. Lift out uneven shading, paper colour, fold lines and stains so the paper looks plain and white.
  1. Make the lines solid black. Use a threshold or contrast setting so each line is solid and each gap is clear. Stop before lines thicken or fill in.
  1. Remove specks. Delete stray dots, dust and scanner noise, but leave small text such as hole sizes and notes.
  1. Trace the lines into vector shapes. Turn the cleaned bitmap into vector paths so the drawing can be scaled and saved for a machine.
  1. Tidy the paths. Remove duplicate lines, close open ends and simplify curves so the drawing has fewer stray points.
  1. Check the finished drawing. Compare the vector against the scan, measure key dimensions on screen against the paper, and save a copy in the format your machine accepts.

Tools that can do it

VectorMagik traces a picture into vector shapes using its own engine. [1] You can limit the result to between 1 and 64 colours. [1] You can click shapes to delete them, such as a background, or merge two shades into one. [1] You can move or delete curve nodes and round individual corners after converting. [1] You can compare the vector with the bitmap side by side, or flip between them with B and V keys. [1] You can save the result as SVG, PDF, EPS, AI, DXF, EMF or PNG. [1] Downloads exist for Windows x64, macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Linux x64, plus a browser version. [1] Free for everyone; business use needs a licence (PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0). [1]

Other tracing tools can cover the same steps. Check each one's own page for the steps it supports, its export formats and its fees before you choose. Whichever tool you pick, the cleaning steps above still apply.

Common mistakes to avoid

Tracing before cleaning is the most common mistake. A noisy scan turns every speck and fold line into a shape, and those shapes are slow to remove later. Clean the scan first.

Trusting the scan's size without measuring is another error. Scanners and copiers can change scale slightly, so measure a known dimension on the paper and compare it before you cut anything.

Setting the threshold too hard breaks thin lines and fills small holes. Adjust it while looking at the lines, and check the holes in particular.

Cropping too tightly can remove a dimension, a note or a title block at the edge of the sheet. Crop after checking that nothing important sits near the border.

Saving over the original scan leaves you with no way back. Save each edited version as a new file.

Choosing the export format last can waste a whole session. Confirm which format your machine accepts before you begin.

Frequently asked questions

How do you clean a scanned drawing before tracing it?

Scan the drawing flat, straighten and crop it, and check one measured dimension against the paper. Then remove the background shading and specks, and make the lines solid black with a clear gap between them. Only after that should you trace the lines into vector shapes. Tracing a noisy scan turns every mark into a shape, so the cleanup is the step that saves the most time later.

Which formats can VectorMagik save a traced drawing in?

You can save the result as SVG, PDF, EPS, AI, DXF, EMF or PNG. [1] Check which format your cutting or bending software accepts before you save, because the file has to match what the machine reads. Save the traced drawing as a new file so the original scan stays untouched.

Is VectorMagik free to use for hobby metal fabrication?

Free for everyone; business use needs a licence (PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0). [1] It is licensed under PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0. [1] Read the licence terms before you use the drawings in paid work, since business use is the case the licence treats differently.

Can VectorMagik show a traced drawing next to the original scan?

You can compare the vector with the bitmap side by side, or flip between them with B and V keys. [1] Use this to check that every line, hole and note still sits where it was on the paper. A comparison like this can catch a missed line before the part is cut.

Which computers can run VectorMagik?

VectorMagik runs on Windows, on Apple Macs (both newer Apple-chip models and older Intel models), and on Linux. [1] A browser version runs in the web browser using the same engine. [1] Choose the installer that matches your system, or use the browser version when you cannot install software on the computer you have.
